Tesla Confirms FSD V14 Lite Coming in Q2 2026 — HW3 Owners Still in the Game
During Tesla’s Q3 2025 earnings call, the company shared encouraging news for owners of older Hardware 3 (HW3) vehicles. While the newest versions of Full Self-Driving (FSD) are currently exclusive to cars with Hardware 4 (HW4), Tesla reaffirmed its commitment to HW3 and announced plans for a new update — FSD V14 Lite, expected to launch in Q2 2026.
Current State of HW3 Vehicles
Today, HW3 vehicles are running FSD V12.6, a “lite” version that integrates some features from FSD V13. Meanwhile, HW4 cars are already operating on FSD V14, with versions V14.2 and V14.3 scheduled for release before the end of 2025.
Tesla hasn’t provided a detailed roadmap for achieving full autonomy on HW3 yet, but executives emphasized that the company hasn’t given up on these vehicles. VP of AI Ashok Elluswamy reiterated this commitment, explaining that Tesla intends to upgrade the hardware — but only after solving autonomy. The reason is simple: Tesla wants to know exactly how much computational power is needed before offering upgrades, instead of guessing now and having to upgrade again later.
What Is FSD V14 Lite?
Tesla confirmed that V14 Lite will arrive around Q2 2026. Similar to how V13 Lite merged certain improvements from V13 into the V12.6 build, V14 Lite will aim to deliver as much of the V14 experience as possible within HW3’s limitations.
However, expectations should be tempered. HW3 hardware simply can’t handle the 10× increase in parameters or uncompressed video input that make V14 so smooth on HW4.
HW3’s Technical Limitations
The main bottleneck for HW3 isn’t just processing power — it’s memory. HW4 doubled HW3’s memory capacity, and even that remains tight. Elon Musk mentioned that Tesla’s upcoming AI5 computer could feature up to 144GB of RAM, about 9× more than HW4.
Because of these constraints, HW3 won’t get the full FSD V14 experience. Some existing FSD V13 features, such as starting FSD from Park and reversing with FSD engaged, still aren’t supported on HW3, and that’s unlikely to change with V14 Lite.
What to Expect from V14 Lite
FSD V14 introduces major upgrades in smoothness, latency, and situational awareness. While HW3 can’t run the full neural model, Tesla may still bring several improvements to V14 Lite, including:
-
Better handling of construction zones, emergency vehicles, and gated entries
-
Automatic parking at the destination
-
New speed profiles for different driving styles
-
A refreshed user interface with on-screen Speed Profile switching and no separate Autopilot icon
These changes would make HW3 vehicles more capable in everyday driving, even if they don’t match HW4’s refinement.
Release Timing and Future Hardware Upgrades
According to Ashok Elluswamy, V14 Lite is “probably expected in Q2 next year,” meaning sometime between March and June 2026. No additional FSD updates are expected for HW3 before then, so owners will likely be waiting several more months.
Given Tesla’s historical update pace, it wouldn’t be surprising if V14 Lite lands closer to summer 2026. That timing also aligns with Tesla’s planned launch of AI5, expected in late 2026.
If Tesla intends to base future HW3 upgrades on AI5, it wouldn’t make much sense to spend massive resources on V14 Lite only to replace the hardware shortly after.
The Road Ahead
For now, the message is clear: Tesla isn’t abandoning HW3 owners. The upcoming V14 Lite update should extend the life and functionality of these vehicles, bringing a taste of FSD V14 to older hardware.
However, real hardware upgrades — and the full autonomy promise — likely won’t arrive until after Tesla solves autonomy and finalizes AI5 hardware. Based on current timelines, that probably means no major HW3 upgrades before late 2026 — and possibly later.
